Default Help needed - anyone cut off the cross bar over the rear fender

I would like to remove the bar that crosses over the back of my fender on my 2008 Street Glide. I've seen other people who did this and put extra lights in the remaining hole.

Has anyone done this, and how did you do it? I'm assuming I have to remove the bar first and then reattach after.

Thanks - Eric

When I removed the one from my 07 I didn't want to take everything apart so I just cut it off. I just removed the bags and used a small hacksaw with a fresh blade and cut the bar off. I put a thick rag on the rear fender and took my time with the saw and it worked just fine. I also used a small round file to clean up the inside of the bar when I was done with the cut.

Thanks for the links gents. Is the install easy on the bracket removal? I have the sissy-bar docking kit also installed.

Also - Buddha96 - what did you put on the bar after you cut it off.

Doesn't the frame flex when you take off that crossbar? I've heard some say that it does.

for what it is worth, I spoke to an engineer at the 105th shindig. He did confirm that there would be flex if the bar is removed. That being said, I also removed the bar off of my 06 RK with the Bruiser parts. I did not notice more flex, but I didnt ride that bike extremely hard.

You need to cut the bar behind the rail....not remove. The bar does hold the fender and needs the "unseen" area to remain on the bike. I've had mine cut for a yr and a half. Cut it with an air cut-off wheel.
