'06 RKC should I get Apes ?
#11
I'm am 6'2" as well and find the apes very comfortable and on long trips. The stock bars killed my neck and back. Sitting up straight is the way to go for me. As for handling, it takes about an hour to get used to but I don't think I have compromised anything. As for the price you can expect around $1100-$1300. The parts with bars and cables will run you $500 - $600 and you have a full day of shop labor. I opted to install myself. It is a project but a fairly easy one. Just takes time. Mine are 16" Wild Ones.
The last reason you should get them is because chicks dig 'em!

I just put 16s on my RK. Here's my how-to write-up. Not difficult: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touring-models/271781-a-how-to-guide-for-ape-install.html
I never had problems with the stock bars until I took a 3 day road trip. Pure misery. Now it's like a friggin Lazy Boy. I'm 6'3 and the bars put my hands just about shoulder height (tad lower), no numb hands. But, since people's height doesn't mean the same torso or arm length you really have to sit on a bike with apes first. Going to a dealer and sitting on a RK while they hold various bars will give you an idea. In most states it's illegal to have bars that put your hands higher than your shoulders: http://university.apehangers.org/hbarlaw.php
I used Magnum Chromite II cables because they look sweet, but also because I didn't have to special order them (unlike Barnett) for my application, and they put up with my nuisance emails with lots of questions: http://www.magnumshielding.com/
No pics of the bike yet, but I'll post when I get 'em.
In answer to FunnyGirl: Apes and a backrest are the only way to go for the long haul!
