Wink Reason for key on power only at cig. lighter.

The reason Its not wired "hot" to the battery ,is that if they did that ,They would be forever replacing batteries for the people that would leave phone chargers, gps and everything other accessory that can be plugged into a 12v outlet on . And of course, all would want that battery warrantied, because it wasn't the customers fault the factory wired it that way.

I won't have a bike without the Tender pigtail. Of course, it serves a dual purpose. In cold storage (winter here in the north) it keeps that battery good. It also ( with the assistance of a 6" plug adaptor) plugs into the heated gear for riding in temps down in the 20's

why would you think that running a battery tender through all those wires would make any sense? sounds like you need a course in electronics 101. I am guessing if you tried it the grounding circuit may cause some problem or perhaps the fuse. Also the wire may connect to other devices in the harness. just take five and dio it right

When you get the seat off, run a voltage meter across the terminals on the battery. A battery that has be at rest for a few hours should be 12.7 volts. It would take a good month for it to drain down even a volt if it sat idle and it would still crank over the bike. Does your dash voltgauge read 14+ a while its running, it should even with a good load on it, lights radio, etc. Does it read the same at the battary when the bike is running, you should actually have a tad more voltage at the battery. What is the reading with the motor off? If its below 12.0 and/or you trip the starter and it goes way down the scale I would suggest that you opt for a new battery. Play it safe and try a new battery, they can fail from one start to the next without any reason or indication.

skooba, gonna put my DVM on it later.

it's on the 1 on the 14 when running:
-radio
-spots
-high beam

thats when it's moving

at idle, its on the 2 on 12 - is that too low?
that's with:
-radio
-spots
-high beam
-all 4 speakers

when you cut all the stuff off, it slowly creeps up to almost the 1 in the 14

at a dead idle, this was after i had been riding for a while,

been thinking about it, i do a LOT of stop & go riding (went to Radio Shack tonite, got parts to make my battery tender harness, Walgreens for the 33db ear plugs, ATM to deposit a check)

so I will put it on the Tender & see what happens. my last one, i just kept the tender plug in the crack in the seat for the driver backrest. wire it all up tonight.

The dealer wires the pigtails in for the battery tender.

You're not supposed to use the cig lighter for charging the battery because of the wiring. If it heats up, or something is connected backwards, your wiring could melt or burn up. You know yourself, that there are people out there that don't know squat about wiring, but still try, and sometimes get things messed up.

I guess that the "TARD" would have his ignition on and the 12V plug would be hot ANYHOW?

>>I would suspect that the reason for the lighter NOT being constantly hot, is there is some tard out there that would try to do a direct jump start thru it, causing a wiring meltdown.<<

THEN we would be able to read "20K for a bike, and you can't jump it thru the cigarette lighter"

I am thinkin the original poster is having more problems than having to spend 20 minutes of his time wiring in a pigtail. Maybe a bad battery.......

Don't think the heat is our problem. I would take it to dealer asap to get it checked out under warranty. Must be a charging issue.
