Default Mileage

So I have 1400 miles on my 08 SG and I wanted to see what I was getting for mileage. I filled it up and reset the trip. Ran 201 miles and was near empty, so I filled it up. Took 4.8 gallons. 41.8 mpg.

So... Why does it only take 4.8 to fill up at 6 gallon take?

I leave it on the jiffy stand so I know its not full all they way?

If I stand it up will it take more fuel in the take and be "topped off"?

How many miles are you averaging per tank?

The tank wasn't empty. At 41.8 mpg you would get 250.8 miles on six gallons of gas.

I get an average of 40 mpg.

I was really close to E but the light had not yet come one. How many miles are you getting out of a tank?

Like all the HD Gauges they're only close. NEVER RELAY on the FUEL GAUGE they're never right... You just learn that you need to stop for gas some where around 200 miles.
MPG - I get a avg of 40+ City Hwy...

The low fuel light is "sposed" to come on around one gallon I believe ..

I'm guessing with 1400 miles you will get better after maybe 3000 or so , every Harley I have had was that way ..

The gas gauge is not accurate. The fuel range function is accurate. The fuel range function shows the approximate mileage available with the amount of fuel left in the tank. Press the function switch to the left of the speedometer until their is an "r" on the left in the display window. The miles to empty is displayed to the right. You will find more in this in the owners manual.

At times I will let it go up to 200 mile before filling the tank. I'm not going to push it much more than that.

On my old 2000 I get 37 to 38 no matter what I do, so you fellas with newer bikes are doing great. Wow, 250 miles on a tank of gas, that's awesome.

This does not make sense and you guys will not believe me but here goes.

Cruise control, flat terrain, 75mph on the interstate and I consistently get 42-43mpg, never higher gas mileage. I have 8700 miles on the bike.

08 SG, stock motor, SE Air Cleaner, Stage I Download, and Rush 2.0 slip-ons, riding only one up, all the time.

Get this? Rode with a group of speeders the other day on country backroads. Never used cruise control one time, consistently riding in the back two or three spots. Leader would pass everything in a heartbeat. The rest of us would lag behind for our turn to safely pass. I would mostly have to pass and run 85 to catch the rest of the group. I just would not go faster than 85mph, gee whiz it was a 55mph speed limit. Rode all day like this. Not my style of riding and I never ride like this. We passed cars all day, speed up, slow down, speed up, slow down. Not very relaxing for a cruiser like myself.

Here goes the punch line. I filled up and checked my mileage three times because I didn't believe my cell phone calculator was correct....48 miles per gallon. I new record high for me. Go figure???
