Default 2005 Twin Cam Big Bore or not?

Hi everyone,
I ride a 2005 EG Standard..Stage 1 Kit, Screaming Eagle pipes, HD Power Commander. I love the bike but I need more power. I was looking into a 103" Big Bore Kit but found out that HD discontinued the silver version. Can opt for the 95" but really want 103. HD dealer said they can piece a kit together with a cam to satify my needs but it may be pricey. Am I better off going for a newer model with a 96"? The cost of a newer bike and Big bore kit will be more than the work on my 05....confused, can't decide, any ideas?

I've never been lacking power on my 05 standard,it has always done what I needed it too.My buddys' 96 with 6 speed trans uses more fuel and is no quicker than my 88 ,as a matter of fact my Nightster kicks his butt easily from start to top end.All these bikes have stage one ,except the Sport,it only has a 1/2 inch hole drilled in each baffle.

You can build a 95" that will eat up the dealer's 103" kit..............for less money too.

Or you can take your engine out of your bike, put in a 103" crank, and work with your own motor and parts.

There are a ton of options, and the only thing is what kind of money you want to invest.

You need to decide how much more power you want. You would see a noticeable increase with a cam swap and tune. Even more "power" available with changing your 3.15:1 primary gearing to 3.37:1 (which is a simple parts swap since the parts were OEM on touring EFI bikes from '99-01, for about $400 in parts.

As MUC see mentioned, I wouldn't spend the $$$ for an SE 103 kit since you will need a new crankshaft and substantially more labor involved, and still not run as well as a well-built package 95" kit from one of the reputable vendors.

To get to 103" you will need a stroker crank. Might as well do the Timken conversion while you're at it. And the rest of the can of worms will follow. Forget about H-D performance parts, that's an oxymoron. Lots of reputable builders are eager to assist with your new found sickness

Go for it Slow EG's suck !

95 inches is the easiest money to spend, have the heads done with a cam upgrade and damn near double yer horses....

Nothing wrong with 95" stage II or III. Just make sure you use parts that work well together. Many of the sponsors of this forum that do engine builds will be happy to help you out. I have the boring SE 95" stage II, it was on the bike when I bought it, I am happy with the power and I get great gas mileage.

Sound like 95" is the way to go. I noticed needing a new crank for the 103 when I saw the kit. That's why it's so much more money. I was told by R &R Racing of Manchester NH, that they have Stage 1-5 kits to bring to 95" that will smoke the 110 SE's. Your right they said with worked heads, cylinders, better pistons and the correct cam..I will be more than satisfied..........Thanks for the help

Default 95" and gear change

I did a whole motor thing and was chasing the powerband I finally got a decent tune but really could not believe the difference until I did the gear change. I only changed the front comp sprocket to the 24 tooth and that is where I felt the biggest difference!

If I had to do it all again I'd go with an HQ build!!!

I am gonna run this until it is time to rebuild and then its fix the crank bearing and HQ all the way.

Current setup

SE HC Forged Pistons 95"
SE 257 Cam
25deg Injector
SE Performance Heads Reworked
SERT
Energy one clutch
100/100
