Going to do this on Wenesday. Read the manual just to make sure I have everything I need but noticed it says when removing top bolt to be prepared for the nut to pop out do to pressure of the spring. Don't know if my forks(09) are the same as 07 forks or not and this part was not covered that I see. Is it a bitch to get that nut back on after filling fluid?

No Spring under the fill cap. If you take the entire assembly apart then yeah.

Cap is just screwed back on after filling.

If go here to Ronnie's HD and look up 09 SG front forks you can see all the parts #5 is what you unscrew there is no load on it. Parts Finder RONNIE'S HARLEY-DAVIDSON PITTSFIELD, MA (800) 253-7667

BTW, you can access the top plugs by removing the ignition switch and fairing cap, which IMO is easier than removing the radio.
removing the switch and cover is much easier than the radio but there is not much room between the cap and the handle bars, I got a sallow socket off e-bay for $12 its less than a inch tall and works great + when you go to fill them put a piece of flexible hose on a small funnel so it can bend under the inner fairing, someone on here did a great write-up on doing this with photos a few years back

At 30,000 miles I've just accomplished this feat on my bike using a 12 oz. plastic container I stole from the wife's kitchen supplies, a 3 port ball valve and a MityVac 8500. It took several hours of messing around because I couldn't get a vacuum. I finally figured out that my air leak was at the fork drain hole. I smeared plumbers Goop around the tubing/plastic fitting where it inserted into the drain hole and let it dry for 30 minutes. That solved the air leak through the drain hole threads. It was very rewarding to see the fresh fork oil get sucked up into the fork after applying about 25 ft. lbs. of vacuum. Like they say.....it's the little things that make life so enjoyable. So, now I can change the oil anytime I like for the cost of the oil, type E in my case. The 3 port valve, fittings and MityVac pump set me back about 100 smackers. A heck of a lot less than the dealer wanted.....$300 to $400 to change the oil, sheesh.

Default oil wt accessing the cap bolts

I have read each and every thread related here . and I have read other threads concerning fork oil wts . I found that Harleys fork oil (E) is 5wt. Harleys fork oil (B) is 10wt and Harleys (SE) is 15 wt . I installed shorter springs in the front of my 07 road king . only because the bike was to tall for me . I have a short inseam . the bike had 32k on the clock the fork oil that came out was dark and it did not smell very nice at all .I believe the oil gets heated up and gathers small particles. of metal and this is why it looks and smells dirty . ever smell the tranny fluid in your cage? its not to pretty either . I replaced the fork oil with Harleys type (e) oil per my manual 11k miles later I am changing the fork oil again. I am going with bell ray (7) or was that 7.5? it has not showed up yet < any way I sometimes get a bottoming out affect with the 5 wt now . as far as accessing the fork cap bolts . with out a fairing its easy and I used a big crescent wrench .ty for writing this very informative post

Default how much fork oil?

ok my forks have been draining for 2 days the front end was off the ground not very much oil came out . so I lowered the front to the ground and worked the forks up and down re raised the front end again and not much more came out . im sure the total amount fro each fork was way less than the 11.1 oz s the book calls for . so here is my question .. what do I do if the forks will not accept the full 11.1 ozs the book calls for ? btw its a 07 roadking thanks in advance
