Default 6th. Gear Light Goes Out When You Clutch?

Odd... after several years of riding with the 6 speed tranny, just barely happened to notice this week that if in 6th. when I pull in on the clutch, the indicator light goes out.

It makes my head hurt to try to figure out the sensor placement that would do that... or why Mama MoCo thinks it is necessary??

Normal. If you notice when you're upshifting, the 6th gear indicator light doesn't come on until you engage the clutch.

If you think about it, you are only "in gear" when the clutch is engaged. Maybe this is the reason behind it.

Yeah, had always noticed the delay in lighting when upshifting. Seems it would be best if the 6th. gear position was indicated all the time while in 6th. Must be some logic to it that my poor brain can't handle.

That's what my Dyna does too - can't think of a good reason for it.

I believe the indicator is only lit when in 6th gear at greather than 45 mph. There is no special sensor for it. The computer just knows it.

You shouldn't be trying to git into 6th gear till yer over 2000rpm, if you do yer gonna lug the motor.

Wow, gentlemen, what gear are you in when you pull the clutch? No gear, no brainer.

exactly. it goes by engine rpm. thats why if you change out one of your pulleys, it is common for the 6th gear light to no longer function.

but i do have to admit that i never noticed that if i pulled the clutch in, the light went out. i did notice that it took a couple seconds after shifting into 6th for it to light up.

Because there is no "6th gear sensor", the ECM compares road speed and rpm to decide you're in 6th gear.
