Soft steel bolts

Soft steel bolts
Yesterday was the second time I have broken off bolts when installing aftermarket bling. I didn't even feel like much pressure was being applied. It felt like the bolt was turning. One was on the shifter peg and the other was on the Mass air flow sensor. If Harley is going to put loctite on every bolt, then they should get a stronger bolt to withstand the torque. I'm afraid that this is more the norm than the exception. Any comments?

RE: Soft steel bolts
I personally have never had the problem. If you heat up the loctite before trying to remove, it will help you out. When I first opened the thread, I thought the problem was that you were putting them on too tight, and I was going to suggest a Torque wrench, obviously not the problem.
Sorry you're having such a pain in the butt with it.

RE: Soft steel bolts
YOu have to be carefull when installing aftermarket parts and using the same hardware that came on the bike. Harley uses a threadlocker on every bolt they install, and if you don't clean out the threads of the hole the bolt goes in then you will have this problem alot. Be careful and realize that if you are using locktight yourself, then you don't need to tighten the bolt that much to keep it there. The locktight will do the job for you. Snug is all you should need.

RE: Soft steel bolts
I know what you're talking about. During my recent bike mods I thought I was going to break some as well, I mean when I broke one loose the futher I backed it out the harder it was to turn, I was lucky and did'nt break any. Maybe Pilots suggestion for heat would help, but I'd use a heat gun not flame heat.
There was a white looking residue on the threads, I'm not sure what Harley uses as loctite,( it definately was'nt blue loctite), maybe someone does.
