Default Spark Plugs - 6R12 vs. 10R12A

Trying to figure out if the Vrod plug 10R12A is hotter or colder than the stock TC96 plug 6R12.&nbsp\\; If anyone is using the Vrod plug in your TC96, how is it and why did you switch?

FWIW. I am a mechanic by trade and when I got my first HD, an old respected HD mechanic told me to NEVER change from a stock plug on a HD, it was never proven to be an advantage. My .02

That has been my thoughts as well, but it was recommended to put in the 10R12A by the dealer, but they couldn't definately tell me if it was hotter or colder.&nbsp\\; As you can tell I don't trust the answer they might give me so I thought I would check here...this board hasn't failed me yet.&nbsp\\;

I believe with the plugs you mentioned, the 10R12A will be hotter. Im trying to figure the difference by the part number. I do know the R means resistor type, Im pretty sure the 6 and the 10 are the heat range and the A suffix is pprobably the length of the threaded in part of the electrode, this is critical because of the location of the spark upon ignition. I think the 12 is the diameter or thread pitch, and since they both have the same #, it will fit in the same hole.
Im not sure about iridium, but I do know the only affect of the platnium plug is for longevity. The auto industry came out with them when cars could go 100k before you had to change the plugs.

Installed the 2 steps colder V-rod Plugs, Rode about 30 miles today gassin it, crusin it, even lugging it a little. No Pinging at all. 2011 Limited with K&N element in stock A/C Housing, V&H twin slash slip-ons. Had the Night-Rider "V-ieds" on since bike was new. The engine has always pinged after warm-up with ambient temps in the eighties regardless of the setting on the "V-ied" dials. When I checked the stock Spark Plugs the rear was a light gray, the front nearly pure white. If that ain't an indication of "LEAN" I'll kiss your ugly, er.... Dog! Why should I or anyone pay $25,000 for a new Bike, and then have to pay another $2000 to make it run right? Shitty deal!

If you do some cross referencing , you will find that the v-rod plugs are colder than the 6r12

What is the part number You used?

According to a good friend thats a HD PHD mechanic w/ 20 yrs service, the 10R12 is 2 steps cooler than the 6R12 is. I have no reason not to believe him.

I've run most all the various plugs available and have not seen any difference between them except on a Dyno test. New plugs are better than old plugs but theres little performance difference between the regular, Plat or Iridium. Running a cooler plug may reduce some pinging on some bikes.

Having said all that, I was running NGKs and because I got a set of 10R12 Plats for free, I put them in. It still starts, runs & goes down the road nicely, no noticeable difference in anything ...
