I'm with the general consensus. Down shift as I slow. I don't catch 1st until 5 or less. Anything over 10 and it clanks in. I usually 99% of the time, don't engine brake.
That is the real question &\\; what the instructor meant: Do you downshift to slow down? Obviously, everyone HAS to downshift when slowing down otherwise, you'll never get the bike back into a starting gear.
I downshift to slow down and avoid using brakes except to come to complete stops, or for quick braking.
PS: The ony reason they teach brakes only is to simplify the stopping process for new riders. Period. Panicky riders worried about a clutch, gear shifting AND brakes is a dangerous combination, so the idea is to stress using your brakes to stop &\\; not worrying about the shifting - when you HAVE to. Engine braking will not harm a transmission or engine if done at the proper RPM range.
