I downshift to stay in the right gear but keep the clutch pulled in unless I'm going to roll in that gear for a bit. \\; My grandfather taught me that it's cheaper to replace the brakes than it is to replace the clutch. \\; Old habits/lessons are hard to break and I haven't had any compelling reasons to change that habit.
When I took the Basic Rider Course developed by MSF we were taught to downshift when braking. \\; What course were you taking that the instructor said otherwise?
I down shift and brake, But I do not down shift to save brake pads. I usually keep the clutch in and down shift . \\; easier on the clutch, tires and I stay in thee \\; right gear. \\;
It's a no brainer! you downshift as you slow down you don't want to be in 5th gear when the light turns green \\;trying to take off with an impatient 18 wheeler behind you.
