RE: what to do if insurance don't pay out?
That's a huge concern of mine- either being stolen or totalled. The insurance companies get these scumbag attornies to write their policies and you have to be a scumbag attorney to understand everything. My agent told me to keep receipts and take pictures of any mods I have done and they would pay in the event of a total loss. I'm not so sure it would happen that way. I'd be interested to hear how your buddy makes out...he may end up in court with it.

They can't usually - call yer state insurance regulatory agency and see what he can do. In Texas, ah've been VERY successful fighting 'em based on replacement value. Here, they have to prove they can provide an exact (within reason) replacement of the lost vehicle for the price they offer. Call YOUR insurance agent and see if he can offer any suggestions. Once the dust settles, have yer buddy change insurance carriers!

It's a bitch for sure. \\;\\\\\\;
On the other side of the scale, for those of us who have to pay a property tax on their vehicles, the local government will over-value the motorcycle. \\;\\\\\\; I got a property tax bill 3 months after I took delivery of my RK in 2005 and the "tax value" was more than MSRP! \\;\\\\\\; Explain that..................
When we bought my wife's car a few years ago, I used KBB to get an idea of the value. \\; Somewhere on line ( maybe KBB ) they also listed what similar vehicles in my area were actually selling for. \\; That's a number the insurance company needs to be in line with.

It's in the insurance company's best interest to get people to take the least amount possible, they typically offer as low as \\;70% of actual value on the first offer. It's your job to get the most. Get pricing from KBB and other sources for the same bike, as well as dealer quotes. Ask in writing how they came up with their value. Explain how you came up with yours. If you reach stalemate, ask for meeting with adjustor's supervisor. If you are still way apart, look in your insurance contract. Many have the ability to get an estimate from a third party adjustor. Tell them you want to invoke that right. If all else fails, contact your state's insurance regulatory board, and cc the insurance adjustor and supervisor.
