EMERGENCY DRIVE BELT
#21
Do they even offer emergency drive belts anymore? I used mine after my swingarm cracked and over stretched the original belt (at 118,000 miles.) Fortunately, I discovered it at the shop as I was heading home. We had a welding shop on premises and we lifted the bike ('00 FLTRSEI,) by the saddlebag guards and welded the swingarm right there on the spot.
The emergency belt took a full hour to install but I got home that night (46 miles,) no problem. Since they're rated for 200 miles, I foolishly tried to drive it to work the next day while waiting for the replacement belt to show up. It broke (gravel driveway?) less than 1/2 mile from the house at the bottom of a hill at 5:30 in the morning. It's a heavy bike to push up a hill back to my 1/4 mile long gravel driveway....

As someone who has to drive several miles of gravel road everyday, it has been my experience that the belt guard DOES make a difference. My last bike averaged picking up about one rock in the belt per year. Never snapped or broke it. I'd just be looking things over and see a pebble lodged in the middle of the belt.
My current bike I've had almost 7 years and have yet to pick up a rock......knock on wood.

Old thread or not it is back to life. You would more likely need a spare engine than a spare belt. provided you inspect it now and then adjust it correctly. I have put over 80,000 on a couple of them . 75,000 on others never had one fail. My 1996 FB still has the factory belt on it.
And I was told the Belt would not last 10K with the sidecar. They got that wrong also.

Haha, good stuff. Long time HD tech here, I've never seen a kit on a bike, Harley sold a bunch btw. My 03 E Glide had over 100,000 on her and I replaced swing arm bushings and the belt with a reinforced sidecar rated belt. Another 150,000 miles and all still looks good. Ride to Sturgis from Florida every other year and have NO worries about the belt.... just sayin'

Broke a belt in Gardner, MT. Had a repair belt shipped over night from Missoula. The owner was pulling a trailer and carrying his wife and made it to Mandan, ND when the temp belt broke. Rough Rider sent a truck out and took the bike back to the shop. I think it was a 600 mile ride on a 200 mile belt. It had about 12 narrow screws holding the ends together.
