RE: Am I whimping out?
I'd hack it before a trike ..
 \\;
Ya hatfta learn a whole new riding technique either way ..
 \\;
About ten years ago the Lehman trike conversions were about $10 grand I was told , I never priced it , but for $5 grand you can hack it from Harley \\;.. They recommend regearing the motor sprocket up one tooth I believe ..
 \\;
Have tried to convince my wife for years , and she aint going for the hack ..

RE: Am I whimping out?
I worked in surgery for 17 years. Did lots of bi-lateral knee replacements. Talk to your doc about it. Get all of the surgical pain over with at once, Rehab goes well because you can't baby the surgical side. There have been great advancements in the durability of the materials so they last longer before (or if) revision is necessary.
I'm not saying you still might not need to mod your bike at some point. But two wheels or three wheels, you still gotta walk at both ends of the ride!
