Default Cruise Control Drivng Me Nuts!

My 08 UC has a cruise control that works sporadically.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; It's been to the dealer twice and today it's at it again.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; Driving along, turn on master cruise rocker switch on panel.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; Click "set" switch on right handle bar back and we're on with the green cruise light.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; Now, if you tap the switch forward the bike increases in speed.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; However, if you tap it backwards, it won't decrease speed slightly, but rather the cruise stops working, even though the light is still green.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; Grab the throttle and speed up again.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; The next couple times I try to set it properly, the light won't turn green but remains amber.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; I'm getting ready to go across country and don't want to get halfway there and find the cruise has crapped out again.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; Any suggestions other than a vice grip for the throttle?

I would insist that your dealer replace your existing cruise control unit with a new one since it is obviously defective. In the interim, don't tap the switch to the left (backwards?) if you know that action is what initiates your problems. The switch you're talking about moves left and right, not forward and back.

You're correct about left and right.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; When I set backwards, I meant to the right which says "-".&nbsp\\; In other words, reduce speed.&nbsp\\; I'll insist with the dealer but I've found they always require the problem manifest itself in their presence or they say "We couldn't find anything, it must be alright".

Are they doing their diagnosing in the shop at a workbench? If so, maybe they'd be able to duplicate the problem if they actually took the bike out on the road and tried using the cruise control.

In any case, best of luck to you with the problem.

I have an 07 which has a separate cruise control module. Yours is build into your ECM.
I had my bike to the shop 4 times before they finally found a pin in a plug to the cruise unit that was not making contact. These things can take time to find and fix. I know it's difficult to be patient. The mechanic that finally fixed it apologized at least 10 times.

Take a look in your repair manual (you do have one, right?). The cruise control troubleshooting section is immense.

With regards to a repair manual, I don't have one.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; Frankly, even if I possessed a manual, I won't get involved diagnosing electrical problems with no tools, particulary when the possibilities are "immense".&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; Rather, I would expect that after three tries, professionally trained and compensated technicians would figure it out.&nbsp\\; After all, that's their profession.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; Oil changes, light bulbs, etc., I'll tackle.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; These electronic gremlins are for the experts.&nbsp\\; You could give me a manual on brain surgery, that doesn't mean I'll start the drilling.

I had a problem with mine dropping out on my 07.&nbsp\\; I'd ride along and the green light would go amber.&nbsp\\; I'd try resetting and nothing.&nbsp\\; When I came to a stop, I'd shut the bike off and turn the key switch off and start back up and set the cruise. It'd work for awhile and drop out again.&nbsp\\; I made an appointment with the dealer.&nbsp\\; One morning before the appointment, I rode it to work.&nbsp\\; I started it up while I was still off the bike and noticed that the backend of the bike was really red.&nbsp\\; I squeezed the front brake and it didn't get brighter.&nbsp\\; I pushed the rear pedal and the same thing.&nbsp\\; I had a brake light switch sticking.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; I got it to the dealer and they replaced both brake light switches.&nbsp\\; Been fine every since.&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;
Check to make sure your brake lights aren't always on.
