Whining Rear
Hi everyone, just joined, and already asking a question of my fellow Touring friends...
Im hearing a high pitched whining or howling noise which seems to come from what I believe to be the rear of my 04 Road King. You can hear it when decelerating, or if I shift into neutral and glide at any speed. I rode two up for a couple days, and it seems even louder now. The bike has just under 10k for mileage, and is an 04 Road King Custom. I know that noise can be deceiving, especially when in motion, so Im open for any ideas on this. Any thoughts on what this could be?

 \\;\\\\\\;I had the same noise with my 04 E Glide... get your \\;\\\\\\;Cam Chain Tensioner checked quick, You dont need it breaking up. Mine went out at 24k

Mine started whining loudly about a week after I had the 103" kit put on. Bike has been in the shop twice since then with me complaining about it only to be told "that's normal". Last time I took it in I made sure the bike was nice and warm/hot and the noise was very loud and prominent. Had them fire up a couple of other 103" in the shop and have a listen, then let them listen to mine. There was no disputing something was wrong.
They finally admitted they needed to open her up again and found it was the cam tensioner. It seems there is a redesigned version that is supposed to be installed whenever a big bore kit is installed to prevent the problems I'd been experiencing, and they "forgot" to do it.
Picked it up this past weekend and was very pleased with the lack of whining.

As for the cam chain tensioners, did you hear the noise at idle, or while reving the engine while stationary? I only hear mine while riding. Or do you need a load on the engine to hear it?

I had thought it was a rear wheel bearing, but at a little under 10k for mileage, I thought that was strange. But to add to Montanatinman's post, I did have the ole lady on the back the other day, and to her credit, she was quiet (for once) and the noise was louder.
