RE: How many miles is too many miles, please help
These motors can go over 100k miles when properly maintained. My last bike ('96 RK Evo) had 115k at last check (last winter) and the heads have never been off the bike. A friend has 75k on his 2000 TC88 and another had 60k before he installed a big-bore kit. On the latter, the original pistons and cylinders (replaced for the big-bore upgrade) looked brand new, with no sign of wear. I saw them and even the hone marks were still visible on the cylinders, and the piston coating was intact.
Earlier (pre-TC96) twin-cam motors had problems with cam-chain tensioner wear, and I would have these checked as a part of the deal. Some need attention at 20k, but I've seen some go almost 70k before going metal-on-metal. While in there, consider a cam change to something like Andrews 21 or 26 to boost low-end and midrange performance. Gear-drive cams are also available, which would eliminate future worries about tensioner wear.

Again with the 05s you have to determine if it is an oil burner. A lot of them were. Valve guide seal problem. Pull both spark plugs and check for carbon buildup. I speak from experience with the 05s.

Get the vin number, have your dealer run the number to see if it was an affected bike. Other than that, as others have stated, get the cam tensioner shoes checked. Beyond those two items, the mileage alone is nothing for that bike.

My buddy has a '97 Heritage with 70000 +. Never had any engine work done. Just had the top end done because he had a small seepage oil leak and since it had to come apart he told them to go ahead and do a top end.
I have 35000 + on my '97 Sportster. Never had a wrench on it. Runs great so far, never a problem.
