Default Oil Temp Guage

I had an oil temp guage installed on my 07 SG last winter at my HD dealer.&nbsp\\; Because it was the cold part of the year I thought it was working.&nbsp\\; I've had it in to be checked out 3 times, the last one today, when they replaced the whole thing.&nbsp\\; It's installed into the bottom plug on the oil pan using the NAPA fitting.&nbsp\\; I still don't think it is working.&nbsp\\; On the way home, it got up to about 160 degrees.&nbsp\\; It's 90 degrees out and I ran it about 10 miles at 80 mph.&nbsp\\; Should'nt the oil be hotter that that?&nbsp\\; I don't have an oil cooler.&nbsp\\; Can anyone tell what their oil temp guage is registering?&nbsp\\; Thanks.

Yeah, the oil *is* hotter than that.&nbsp\\; I have a gauge installed the same way yours is &amp\\; I also have the digital dipstick gauge.&nbsp\\; My fairing gauge usually reads about 180/190, &amp\\; the digital gauge reads around 220/226.&nbsp\\; Harley has motor cooling down pretty good.&nbsp\\; I installed an oil cooler to see if it would help with the motor heat, but even if I cover the cooler I can only force the fairing gauge to read between 205 &amp\\; 220 while the digital gets up in the high 230's.

EDIT - I read your post again.
&nbsp\\;
It is working correctly. It takes at least 20 miles to get up to the normal temp of 190 on my bike. However, I have an oil cooler. Prior to that, my oil temp was around 220 to 230.

I doubt that the oil is going to be "hot" after only 10 milestry 30-50 miles and see what you get.&nbsp\\; I live in Metro Atlanta and it does take a while for the gauge to register.

Thanks for the info.&nbsp\\; I'm leaving tomorrow morning for the Elko Biker Rally in Elko, Nevada.&nbsp\\; That's 300 miles of 4 lane desert riding and it's supposed to be about 90 degrees.&nbsp\\; That should tell the tale if it's working or not.&nbsp\\; Ride safe and thanks again.

With air temp btw 90-100F as is normal for this time of year in Sacramento my gauge&nbsp\\;always reads 220-230.&nbsp\\; Was idling in line waiting to enter yosemite this past weekend with air temp near 90 gauge was reading 280.&nbsp\\; I have oil cooler and have never seen the gauge less than 200 after warm up with air temps 80 or above.
