I had State Farm Insurance for 37 years f^ck 'em if they had me an 800 number to call.
I can buy that kind of insurance over the phone/internet and do now.

 

That's bull $hit - out the insurance company right here and let's make sure they get a little less business. Most states have laws in place that prohibit this practice - of course that doesn't mean that an adjuster won't try it on.

 

It is ILLEGAL for them to tell you where you need to take the bike. They can only suggest places. You can take it to whomever you damn well please. Take it to harley and get the new sheet metal and whatever you do don't take it to some shade tree backyard hack. I would told that adjuster where he could go f@#k himself.

 

The one thing they typically can do is apply "accepted industry standards" to determine repair methods and cost. This is the only thing you may get tripped up over.

Given the age of your bike (not very old) it's hard to believe there would be an appropriate way of repairing that did not involve new sheet metal. Arguably they could make you take repainted used - but forget about anything else (filler etc.).
