Default Stage 1 MPG Question

Being this is my first Harley I am confused with regards to my gas mileage. I purchased the bike with the Stage 1 done by the dealer and also the Slip-ons installed.

The problem is my gas mileage is consistently 33 to 35 on the hwy and around 30 in the city. I traditionally drive the speed limit and I'm usually the deciding factor on trips with my buddies due to my reserve comes on before the rest do. I have one friend that has a 07 Ultra, stock bike, he installed big sucker, true duals, and pc3. He gets consistently 38 mpg. The others RK's & they get upper 40's.

Now I am wondering if something was done wrong by the dealer with the install of the stage 1 map or is this pretty normal with mileage for a stage 1 system?

The only way to know for sure if its running like it suppose to is to get it on a dyno but i would get a tuner so it can get set right. The junk download map is a shot in the dark as far as getting it right.

You're does seem to be a bit on the low side. My 2007 stage 1 Ultra averages about 38-40. There is no dyno around here so I don't know how close it is to being well tuned, but it runs good.

I would say you are low also. There should not be much difference in mpg between all the touring bikes. I get 46 on my RK with a stage 1. Thats with my fairing on also, so the bike should be about identicalto a SG or a EG

My 08 SG is getting about 38-40 mpg. I have RH True Duals with PCIII.

I also purchased my 08 from the dealer with Stage 1 AC/download and Rush 2.5 slipons. I averaged about 36-37 mpg with the Rush 2.5 baffle slipons. I quickly found that the Rush 2.5 was way to loud for me and my right side muffler turned gold at the inlet. I installed a set of Rush 2.0 baffles and the sound was better and the gas mileage went to about 39 mpg but still too loud for me. I talked to Jamie at Fuel Moto about his touring baffles for Rush mufflers and decided to get a set. With no other changes than thebaffles I went to 43 mpg. The sound is much more to my liking and I picked up noticeable bottom in torque. Plugs look very light tan. I am happy with this setup. I know a Sert or PCIII plus dyno would make it run cooler but so far the heat has not been a factor for me. I rode about 400 miles this weekend in Louisiana with temps over 90 and while I can tell the bike is running hotter than my 03 Road King it still is not a problem for me. I talked with Jamie again after the swap and some riding. He said that he was getting a lot of good feedback from his touring mufflers with just a Harley Download. He still recommends a PCIII though. I like the KISS principle for my bike. Less stuff to break down with. I bought this bike to ride...ride...ride and then ride some more. Nice torque for passing and decent fuel mileage is my desire but again that is JMHO. Just my 2 cents!

Default RE: Stage 1 MPG Question

Thanks for the replies. When a dealer does a stage 1 download to the ECM, what exactly is being done? I was understood that due to the free flowing of the pipes and the increased air intake that more fuel must be added due to a lean condition. But others have spoke that moco isn't allowed to increase fuel ratio due to EPA regulations and the stage 1 changes some timing & rev limiting. Guess I'm just really confused how the mpg can be so vast between a bone stock bike and a stage 1 bike. Just figured my mileage from riding this weekend. Rode no faster than 60mph, stayed in 6th gear, & there was zero wind; bike got 35 mpg. Also, this was one up riding.
