Haven't had any downsides personally, but I bought a damaged outer fairing to use on the bike with the bra since I've heard/read seond/third/fourth hand accounts of the clearcoat being buffeted by the bra resulting in cosmetic blems
There is a ton of "scratch & dent" outers on ebay for cheap. Just make sure the bronze inserts are all good.
