The shop manual says-
Says to disgard the seal once the primary is removed to check or add oil to the primary. Does anyone actually do that? It would seem that it would be very costly after awhile and since my dealer is over 100 miles away, getting one is a hassle. I’m about to change all my fluids for the first time and if it isn’t really necessary to throw away the primary cover seal let me know. Thanks

If you still have the stock derby cover, then you don't need the full round gasket #25416-99C......you would use the rubber o-ring which comes in a kit with 3 little black o-rings #11105 for the drain plugs all for the low, low price of $2.80 The kit pn# is 17369-06. The next time you go to the dealer pick up a bunch of these kits and you will always have them on hand.

Or you could just buy an 0-ring assortment from Harbor Freight, Chuck Homier or similar with about 500 o-rings in it for about 5 bucks. The kit will have about 50 o-rings that will fit the drain plugs.

well, that’s just the thing. That little cover to the front of the primary doesn’t come off on my 08. It’s just an indentation in the primary case. On my old shovel it would come off and that’s what I’d use.

My FXST is about 10 yrs old & I have had the primary cover off many times & still have the original seal.
I dab a little bit of grease from my grease gun around the groove in the cover & put the large O ring back in, the grease holds it till I get it tightened to spec.
