well, that’s just the thing. That little cover to the front of the primary doesn’t come off on my 08. It’s just an indentation in the primary case. On my old shovel it would come off and that’s what I’d use.

That's what I thought. It seemed excessive to change that gasket each time I pull the Primary cover. I will get the kit though just cause I'm paranoid.

RE: The shop manual says-
Derby Cover O-ring
I just did the 30k service on my '01 RKC this weekend and there was no O-ring on my derby cover. The service manual mentions it but does not mention a gasket. When I pulled the deby off there was a full gasket there that my indy used when he did the last service. This was the same gasket that the dealer sold me.
Am I correct in assuming that the gasket replaces the large O-ring?

Says to disgard the seal once the primary is removed to check or add oil to the primary. Does anyone actually do that? It would seem that it would be very costly after awhile and since my dealer is over 100 miles away, getting one is a hassle. I’m about to change all my fluids for the first time and if it isn’t really necessary to throw away the primary cover seal let me know. Thanks

FWIW, there have been changes over the years in this gasket design, and I believe '06 and later have the new type that juts outward rather than fit flat against the metal surfaces. My old Evo RK used a large o-ring and I found them less durable, changing them out every oil change.

Uh, I really f***ed up this one. I MEANT the derby cover not the primary. What the hell was I thinking. OF COURSE I'd replace the primary cover seal each and every time. The derby seal, not likely each time. Sorry for the goose chase guys. Thank goodness you all can't reach through the Forum and take a swipe at me[sm=boink3.gif]
