well, that’s just the thing. That little cover to the front of the primary doesn’t come off on my 08. It’s just an indentation in the primary case. On my old shovel it would come off and that’s what I’d use.

i've done 3 oil changes on my 07 and have reused the derby cover seal each time. never a problem. in fact, if it were to be a problem i'd be screwed cause i don't have an 'extra' lieing around, and the dealer is over 60 miles away. hmmm, maybe next time i'm over there, i should pick up one 'just in case'

hope y'all didn't just jinx me

Dawg, what about for an '06? The #'s please.
pn#17361-05 This service kit includes 2 #11105 drain plug o-rings, 1 #11324 primary drain plug 0-ring, 1 #25416-99C derby gasket, 1 #34906-85D chain inspection gasket and 1 #60567-90C chain inspection gasket which you do not need as it is not for touring models. Therefore, if you buy the kit you will have an extra gasket that you can give to a buddy with a Dyna, etc. Retail is $17.45

That's what I thought. It seemed excessive to change that gasket each time I pull the Primary cover. I will get the kit though just cause I'm paranoid.

You only need to pull the derby cover for fluid change, not the entire primary cover. Did I miss something in this thread? I've reused the derby cover o ring 3 times on mine. No problems.

Used the same for the last 3 years, many pull offs, never a leak.....But, like most have said, keep a spare just in case.....

Derby Cover O-ring

I just did the 30k service on my '01 RKC this weekend and there was no O-ring on my derby cover. The service manual mentions it but does not mention a gasket. When I pulled the deby off there was a full gasket there that my indy used when he did the last service. This was the same gasket that the dealer sold me.

Am I correct in assuming that the gasket replaces the large O-ring?

Says to disgard the seal once the primary is removed to check or add oil to the primary. Does anyone actually do that? It would seem that it would be very costly after awhile and since my dealer is over 100 miles away, getting one is a hassle. I’m about to change all my fluids for the first time and if it isn’t really necessary to throw away the primary cover seal let me know. Thanks
I changed the original at 500 miles, but looking at the way it is made decided it had much more life to it. I've changed the primary fluid five times since that time and this gasket has been reused each time. Since some oil settles around the edges of the cover, you may see some drips for a short time 'til it empties, but if you wipe the cover and adjacent primary area dry before reassembly it won't do it. IOW, don't panic if you see a few drips, as it should stop quickly. Like most others here, I have spares in case I have a problem, but I don't see these things leaking until the rubber becomes hardened or deformed, and this hasn't happened in 18 months and almost 20k miles.

FWIW, there have been changes over the years in this gasket design, and I believe '06 and later have the new type that juts outward rather than fit flat against the metal surfaces. My old Evo RK used a large o-ring and I found them less durable, changing them out every oil change.

Uh, I really f***ed up this one. I MEANT the derby cover not the primary. What the hell was I thinking. OF COURSE I'd replace the primary cover seal each and every time. The derby seal, not likely each time. Sorry for the goose chase guys. Thank goodness you all can't reach through the Forum and take a swipe at me[sm=boink3.gif]
