Default Carb Replacement on Roadking

Hey all,, I have a 94 Roadking 1340 that I need to replace the carb on. I was wondering what you guys thought about what direction to go. Should I be looking at aftermarket or stay OEM? This is my brothers bike and he hasn't even started it yet. Got it on ebay and procedded to break the carb. I think it's all stock right now. If not he would probably at least do pipes.

Go with a Mikuni 42. It shouldn't cost much more than replacing the factory carb, and it is more responsive, and will handle most any power up grade you might decide to do. The factory carb is fine, but if you have to buy a new one, you may as well upgrade.

On a '94 EVO I would insure that the cam bearings have been changed. There was an issue with the stock cam bearings on EVOS.

Regards,

Bill

Really? I didn't think guys used Mikuni on Harleys? I was looking at an S&S kit that has the air cleaner and some other stuff.

Muffrider,

I run a Mikuni 42 on my FXR and an S&S "E" on my FLHT. Both Carbs are great but there are differences. The Mikuni cold starts better than the S&S, but the Mikuni is more complicated in terms of Jetting and rebuilding than the S&S.

That being said, I bought both Bikes used and that was the Carb that was on them. I've rebuilt and rejetted both of them based on the additional mods (Cam, Headwork) to each engine that I've done.

I'd really recommend simply rebuilding the stock CV Kehin Carb that is on your bike. Unless there is something drastically wrong with the Body of the carb itself, it will run great if properly cleaned, rebuilt and jetted.

Did you put a different cam in? or change pipes or install a different aircleaner? If there have been no changes to your engine and it just is running poorly, It is cheap and easy to rebuild it with Factory parts.

A good runnning stock CV carb will out perform an S&S and get better milage, It will run almost as well as a dialed in Mikuni and cost a lot less.

This board does not have a lot of tech for Evo's and Carbs, if that is what your looking for, you'll get a lot more "Real World solutions and Tech from guys that actually build them" at http://groups.msn.com/harleytechtalk/evo1340.msnw

hi...
i'll second the opinion of the Mikuni 42, MY FRIEND SCOTT HAS ONE ON HIS ROADKING, RUN'S BETTER . starts better, and gets great fuel mileage.

sorry, cap's button sticking due to salsa.

Hey thanks for the info guys... I think he is going with the S&S E. He actually broke off a piece of the carb body where the flote pin goes through. Thats why he is replacing it.

I would prefer to stay with the CV carb that is stock on the bike for a number of reasons, such as parts availability on the road and tunability. They are a very good carb and can be modified to work well for more power with easy obtainable parts..
