Cam Question
Hi everyone. I had a question to anyone that knows about installing cams in a stock 88. My bike is the 06 RKC with V&H ovals, SE A/C, PCIII. Can you safely have mild cams installed to help liven up the low to mid range without harming the reliability. Years ago, a friend had a cam put in his Low Rider and I can remember the drastic change it made in power to that Evo, and it always ran like a top. I am interested in knowing from anyone that has done this, what the feeling was in performance gains over stock, and also an approximate cost in cam price and labor charged to install. Any opinions I would appreciate, thanks, Rob.

RE: Cam Question
On the reliable side of the coin I can tell you I have a big bore high compression bike that I ride everywhere and have not once had any problems with it of any kind. Did 9000 miles last year. I have two others in my local riding group that also have a simliar set up and have twice the mileage I have with no problems. If the bike is built right and rode right even a high compression big bore bike can be reliable.

Your reliability would be just fine. If you plan on doing cams I would recomend going with S&S gear drive. Gear drive is a major must, it will cost alittle more up front but it's well worth it for the reliability. Then I would go with a cam like the S&S 510G. It's good low end to mid range jump up from the stock cams. The S&S 510G will work with the stock 88" motor and stock heads. Then if you ever decide to jump up to the Big Bore and do any head work. The 510G will work even better. It sounds like you already have the PCIII and everything else that's needed to make your bike come alive.
You should be able to find a good shop to install a set of gear drive cams and dyno tune for around $1000.00 with a warranty.
Summer of 2004 I paid $950.00 for the S&S 510G cams along with adjustable push rods installed with Dyno tune. The performance was night and day I gaind 15 HP and 14TQ It was worth every dime. The next year I did Big Bore and Head work and gaind another 20HP & 20Lbs of TQ for $1800.00 Again it was worth every Dime...
