You don't have to sacrifice one to have the other, within reason. On a given platform you can tune the cruise range for mileage, power range for power, using an EFI tuner (PCIII, SERT, etc.). OTOH if you start increasing cubes, installing hi-perf cams, etc., you may not be able to hold the mileage where you had it.

I like power! I also like mpg on trips and when I am low on $$$. So, I have 2 bikes problem solved.
However I have been seeing fuel cost rise and rise. I have take a different look at things. I am staying off of the interstates thi shas helped a lot. Just to see the difference in mpg compared to riding styles and speed I made 2 trips using the same distance and route. 1st trip cruised 100 miles at 75 mph with 30 miles in traffic. 2nd trip 100 miles at 62 mph with 30 miles of traffic.
trip 1 43 mpg average
trip 2 49 mpg average
I enjoyed trip 2 much more. I did not have the hassle of having to pass cagers or them pissing me off.
