Default Starter Clutch Replacement

All,
I finally got my starter clutch in via UPS today. My question is this: can you install it w/out opening the primary up and taking the starter completely off? The service manual is about as vague as can be. According to it to do anything to the starter you have to remove it, but I know that's not true, so what about this? And, any pointers, cuz it seems very straightforward.
tia,
jason

I would think you are going to have to pull the starter. I replaced the starter on my Dyna and it wasnt really that tough of a job.

You've got to take the bolt out that holds the pinion gear on........and you have to take the primary off to get to it....its no big deal

If it is new enough you don't need to pull the primary, check with a dealer.

06 and earlier tourers....you have to remove the primary cover to remove the starter drive so that you can then pull the starter out from the other side.

07 & 08....all you have to do is pull the starter...no removal of the primary is necessary.....the starters and clutch ring gear for the starters were re-vamped in 07...this actually started on the 06 dynas before introduction to all big twin models in 07.
