I have found that if you take a punch and hammer and poke a hole in the end of your filter at both top and bottom, after you put the tin foil trough under the filter, and let the old oil drain out first before your remove the filter, you will have a lot less mess to contend with.
You weren't going to use the filter again anyway, so it won't hurt to poke holes in it.
