Default FLHX Total Oil Change

Checked the oil section couldn't find anything on a total oil change for a bagger (FLHX). Additionally, I saw a referance to using a 2-quart sodabottle torecover oil from the filter(?)on softail total oil change, how? Thx.

Trim a one gallon jug to fit under filter & never spill a single drop. "Total" motor/tranny/primary oil change is simple.

Most folks don't bother with doing a "total oil change" on a bagger because not that much old oil is left behind. Baggers have an oil sump, vice a tank like on Softails, so in draining the sump you get the majority of the old oil out- like when you drain the oil out of a car.

However, one of those companies that makes the Softail kits also makes one for baggers...

The idea is to CATCH the oil that spills as you remove the filter.
Because the filter goes on in a horizontal position, when you unscrew it the old oil will run out and get all over the front of your bike, on the engine, frame, etc.

I used an empty bottle that 90 weight gear oil comes in.
Trim it with a knife.
It slips under the oil filter. As you remove filter, the oil is directed toward the mouth of the bottle. I position and direct it to miss draining on my footboard mounts and to catch it in a drain pan. I may still have a few drops escape but not nearly as much as changing filters without the funnel. It sure makes cleanup lots easier.

Outstanding post & pics! In the past I've always used the filter box (flattened out) as a catch basin. I like yours better and will try it tomorrow.
