What's amazing to me about this TBW problem is that the MOCO even admits that there IS a problem! Are they actually starting to realize that it would be best to take care of the loyalcustomers that keep them in business? That would be a gigantic change in policy!

Wishing you the best of luck and ride safe,

John

Hmmm.....all sounds a bit 'smoke & mirrors' to me.....if I read it right, a blip of the throttle and a turn off means the computer remembers the revs at shutoff and starts up at those revs thinking that's it's real idle speed, yes?

If that IS the case, why not simply wait until the revs die down (just drag them down with clutch / brake) and turn off, then?

Am I missing something here? Why the Hell are we sitting here writing this instead of plagueing the dealers for the MoCo...???

The procedure I read calls for turning the kill switch to on and then turning the ignition switch to on for four seconds (now changed to ten seconds) and then off again. This is to be done four times. This is straight from my '08 Touring Model Service Manual.

What is the source of your information?
XTrooper, What page is that on?
Try page 4-17. Kill switch to run, ignition on and off four times, 3 seconds in between each time, but I heard they are recommending ten seconds. Don't sa nothin' about the throttle opening and closing.

Heads up....for those of you have an 08 with Throttle by wire...there is an issue....when you are shutting down the bike...leave the throttle at idle...if you move the throttle during shut down..the computer will remember where the RPM's were last set...this will be your new idle..
It's really great to see posts here that help those of us who own 08 bikes with the notoriously-flawed "FBW" throttle system out of their dilemmas.

My personal situation is that, with 6,500 miles on my 08 UC now, I don't know anything about that "issue".

But who are these riders who are twisting their FBW throttles during the shut-down sequence? What's that about? Who does that?

This happened to me this weekend....there is no HD fix yet...but there is a temporary fix...

1. Turn your ignition on and off 4 times.
2. Turn your throttle to full open and 0ff 4 times.

Start the bike...it should return to the normal idle setting...
Yes. Absolutely.

But, make sure your weight is only on your right foot. And it helps to hum the verse to "***-bay-ya" repeatedly during the process. These added steps are essential to achieving a successful throttle reprogramming sequence.

But who's screwing around with the throttle when they're shutting the bike down? What's that about? Who does that? No rational person would be doing that, IMO.
+1 yeah why mess with throttle when shutting down?? I know you can twist it below idle... is that what happenned?

I haven't had an issues with my 08 EGS. When I stop, I let the engine idle for 10 seconds or so, then hit the kill switch.

I was thinking the same thing.

When I picked up my new 08 EGC last week the dealership told me to shut the bike off using the ignition switch not the kill switch. He also told me that HD is working on a "fix" for the problem, but it probably wont be until next year. I only have 150 miles on so far and I've had to reset it twice. I don't turn it off with high rpm's. Sometimes when I'm getting off the bike I acccidently twist the throttle handgrip. Even though the bike is turned off I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.

A Service Manager told me with a straight face that "I WAS CAUSING MY OWN PROBLEM BY NOT LETTING THE ENGINE WARM UP TO FULL OPERATING TEMP BEFORE RIDING". I told him that was a total H-D bullshit explanation for a problem with advancing idle that IMHOMOCO does nothave a clue to what is causing it. My '08 Road Glide has been doing that since the day it was new with 6 miles on the odometer. I have resolved to just continue reprogramming the idle when necessary. H-D is recommending a 10 sec. 'hold' vs. the 4 sec that was published in the Service Manual. I did find the revised technique works more reliably than the original. That business of re-programming with the ignition switch and then needing to roll on/off the throttle four times is just more H-D mumbo-jumbo, IMHO.

Don't get me wrong......My '08 Road Glide is my 38th motorcycle to own in my life time and for this time in my life is the best by far. I hope that the much promised upcoming 'flash' to the ECM is available soon and will cure the problem for the remainding life of the bike. ......... BC
