the national does have it "bennies" for locating stolen bikes, roadside assistance, discounts, etc...
the local groups are extremes to say the least. my hometown group meets at a family steak house and rides start at just before noon to different restaurants. the next closest group meet at a bar and have better rides that leave in the morning and the people are more welcome to new folks. so there then,,,,,
years ago when you bought a harley they pushed you into joining the AMA....ooooooohh!!! the AMF days ,,,what were those engines???bowling pin heads....

I've been a national H.O.G. member since 1990. Never joined a local chapter, I don't like riding in groups. HOG membership is well worth the cost just to get the Roadside Assistance. For $19.95 you get unlimited towing and roadside assistance. Truly saved my bacon. A $450 tow cost me nothing. Just sign and go.
