HOG Member- roadside assitance

RE: HOG Member- roadside assitance
I also am a lifetime HOG member and I just attended Primary Officer Training in Birmingham. I asked that exact question and this was the answer. They put most of your life dues you paid in a separate investment account and draw against it each year. That keeps the flow of dues nearly equal to the $45/person even for life members.

that isnt 100% accurate.....im a life member of HOG since 1995 and i havent paid any fees to themsince then.

There are 1.1 million current paid up HOG members. That is $45 million $$$$. I have used HOG towing assistance three times over the years with great success. Longest wait was 4 hours once in the middle of nowhere UTAH. Have several buddies who have used it also. Have not heard any complaints from them either.
ORIGINAL: Fastlane I would like to know how many members renew each year. Let's just say 100,000 at $45 each which comes to $4,500,000. They probably don't have enough money left over after paying those experts that put out their magazines to tell us where and how to ride. Like they say go ride and if you need a tow we are here for you, BS. All those pictures and stories about wide open roads, seems like it's all about money and no service.

Tried to use road side assistance twice, no luck. Once outside Columbia SC the other in North Carolina. Both times kept going back and forth with the operator trying to get some help no luck. Said screw it, made the best road side repair I could and rode on home. They can keep their HOG membership.[:@]

Busted belt in the middle of nowhere in Idaho. Actually only 70 miles from Missoula, MT. Same crap! Said I'd have to wait 3-4 hours, and then they called back and said the only tow or assistance would be $250, and they would only cover $100. The worst part about the whole thing was the idiot I had to talk to. She sounded like she was about 12, and had to have an intersecting street. I tried to tell her there wasn't one, and finally she accepted HWY 93, 60 miles back as the intersecting road. What a ditz! I rode back on a buddies bike, got my own trailer, went back and towed it home myself. First time I've tried to use it in 18 years of having it. It's over now. AAA and State Farm towing. CCRyder

I went to HOG Primary Officer Training, (P.O.T.), last year in Las Vegas at the MGM. They spent close to a million on this training and party and it was worth every cent.
This year I am going to P.O.T. in Las Vegas at the Red Rock Hotel and Casino.
And I'm sure it will be a blast again, meeting all the other chapter officers from all over the world, all the meals, training, beer, all free.
So... is HOG towing trash? you bet it is! I use AAA. But HOG towing is only a small fraction of what you get as a HOG member. Join a local Chapter and see what I mean.

I had good luck with the HOG towing.
My new rear tire with 350 miles on it went flat in St Cloud, MN less than a mile from the HD dealership
The dealer refused to come get me, even though they have a trailer they use to haul bikes.
HOG sent a truck in about an hour, but informed me that I would have to pay the $80.00 tow bill and then apply for reimbursement.
$80.00 was a little steep for a one mile tow, but what could I do.
I have a friend that owns a towing company. He will not tow for any motor club at their rates.
AAA pays him 16 dollars for any tow less than 25 miles. Other motor clubs are similar.
He will charge about $45 for that same tow if you call him.
He will charge about $85 if the police call him.
Big difference.
Remember that whem planning a trip. Check online for names of tow companys you might need.
It took about eight weeks to get reimbursement, but I got it.

Road America is the "parent" company. It has been around for long time competing with AAA, etc. They branched out to do the HOG thing several years ago. They basically have a network of wrecker drivers all over the country. When you call and report a break down..they find out where you are, as best they can based on your information, and they then contact a wrecker driver on contract that is close to where you broke down. None of these drivers are employees of HOG, or Road America. They have just agreed to perform their service at a specified price. If there is ever a problem with the driver not honoring the terms of the HOG assistance program, report it to them and they will cut that wrecker driver out. They are at the mercy of the driver too.
I have used them twice, and when I had Road America for my auto (we sold the product)...I used them 4 or 5 times through the years. I never had a problem, nor did any of my customers.
Hopefully, there are many more "good" reports vs those that had problems.
Ride safe.
