20W50 in all 3 holes. 20,000 miles and no problems.

 

Harley Screaming Eagles have the same weight synthetic in all three holes from the factory. I however changed to Amsoil. I run 20/50 in the engine and main chain case and Amsoil 75/90 in the transmission. This is why. Because the transmission is lubricated by the gears in the lower case carrying the lubricant up to the upper gears. The heavier oil the better it’s carried up to the other gears. The heavier oil coats the surface of the teeth better. The gears as they mesh and release is where friction is most prominent. A lubricant that has a better build up and having a better pressure rating will resist friction better at this point. This is why I run the heavier oil in the transmission.

I have a 2007 FLHX and had some of the tranny noise
then started to use amsoil
I run the 20/50 in all three holes, and it quieted down a sicnificant amount. i live in Iowa and have a few cool mornings and hardley any really hot days. If i lived in the southern part of the us I would probably install the heavier gear oils in my tranny as some of the other guys have suggested. just my opinion.

I use Sny3 (or Mobil 1) and always Belray BigTwin 85w-140 in the tranny.
