Default 2008 Ultra Classic High Idle

I have less than 500 clicks (~350 miles) on a 2008 Ultra Classic. After first ride the idle climbed to about 1500 RPM. Next ride idle is at 1800 RPM. Now this is getting a little hard to control.

Went to dealer today. Mechanic said he ran the ignition switch through a (did not say number) a number of cycles and this rests the fuel management computer? These guys are not exactly forthcoming with info. He also mentioned that he was unsure if this was a true fix!

Anybody else experience anything similar. The sales folks said there is another 08 with a similar issue. As soon as I get this report I will post the results.

Any info will be appreciated,

Joe

I have an 08 EGC but have experienced no problems like what u describe. Do a search on this forum and you will see other's have had same issue. May be linked to shutting off your bike with the "kill switch" while the idle is still high. Not sure I believe it, but the theory is if you turn off the bike with the kill switch the ECU resets the idle to whatever speed you were at when you turned the bike off. Like I said, I have had absolutely no issues with my scoot and don't know that it might be something else, but that seems to be the most popular culprit for what you describe.

I'm sorry I don'tknow the procedure but it requires "cycling" the throttle
It resets the ECM, I read this about someone else having your problem
I have not be able to find it
I am sure someone with more memory than myself will chime in

Had the same symptoms you're having.
Found out it's using the kill switch to turn the bike off that causes it,
although the owner's manual says to shut down with the kill switch.
Turn on the ignition switch, wait until the orange light goes out and then turn it off.
Do that 6 times and it will reset your idle.
Use the ignition switch to turn the bike off after that.

I have an 08 with the same problem. I did not know, not to

shut off with the kill switch. I am going stop doing that.

I also read that giving the bike a quick rev, just before shutting

it off, will also teach the chip to idle faster. Mine returns

to normal after riding for a few miles.

I have an 08 RKC. I talked to my dealer about it this past weekend. What they told me is that reference point for the idle is being changed with the roll back on the throttle. The also told me that Harley is working on a fix to the ECM and expect a download in the future. They confirmed the temp fix is to recycle the ignition switch, (I was told 4 times).

Cycling the ignition switch 4 times is the procedure in the service manual to set the zero on the throttle by wire when the throttle sensor has been replaced. Your bike may not have had this done by your dealer when it was originally set up.

You can still use the kill switch to shut down your bike. I use mine all the time with no problems.

These high idle problems you are having, are they at start up or after the bike is warmed up? Since an air cooled bike is cold natured and there is no choke, the ecm will automatiaclly "choke" the bike at start up so that it will run with out dying. As the bike warms up, it will automatically drop down to a normal idle speed.

In other words, ignore the idle speed anytime you start your bike, warm or cold. It will be all over the place. If after running for a while itdrops to normal, then ....that's normal. Don't worry about it. The ecm is doing what it's supposed to do to help warm up the bike.

If it never comes down, then you might want to have it looked at.

got a '08 FLHTCU... always shut it off with the kill switch...never had troubles with it.

the electronic chocke edwardK mentioned could be a valid cause.

I also have a 2008 Ultra Classic and have had zero problems with sparatic idle,as others have pretty much stated,if you do use the kill switch to shut down (as I do) be sure the idle has come to rest at normal,be sure you don't move the throttle as you shutdown and when all else fails just shut it down using the ignition swith then turn off the kill switch,MOCO will have a download out soon to correct this slight glitch in the system.
