I have used one of these on my last bike and I have it on my current bike. Granted it does not replace a oil cooler. But I disagree that it is a waste of money, it does make a difference, it acts as a heat sink, and it does pull heat out of your oil filter. Its only like 10 bucks, I'm sure none of us have wasted 10 bucks on our bike before.
I have never wasted $10 on my bike, every add on was totally functional [8D]

Uh Huh!!! [sm=confused06.gif]

Metal that is in contact with the heat source and increases the surface area will readily transfer heat. Science says it works.

what's the part #?

does this just slip over the oil filter?

If it does, looks like it would be a cheap way to keep the chrome look on the oil filter without buying the chrome filter

thanks in advance to any replies

I have one on my 1997 FLSTS and it does lower the Oil temp. Haven't put on on the new 08 SG but I would if it came up. I tested a before and after run with it 10 years ago and found out it lowered the oil temp almost 10 degrees
Not bad for a couple of buck. It is a heat sink and it takes about 10 seconds to install and remove.
If you don't think so - try grinding the fins off your motor and see what happens

Yea, those fins on thecylinders probably don't really do anything either.

From Dictionary.com:

Functional (adj.): Having or serving a utilitarian purpose; capable of serving the purpose for which it was designed.

Thus, that seemingly useless piece of chrome bling you spent too much for is functional because it was designed to make you enjoy the look of the bike and the intended result was achieved. Next time one of your sportbiker friends mentions "functional" in a context designed for their tastes, like high-speed handling or performance, remind them of the true definition. What's functional to one person isn't so for another.

or is it a waste of $?
I wouldn't want a device that cools the oil at all times, even when cold which would prolong warm-up times. Being simple heatsinks that transfer heat by convection, I doubt if these filter sleeves do much for cooling, but have never seen a test on them.

Science dictates that it would have to work. How well it works is a different story. Is it worth 10 bucks? I have spent more money on things that don't work, so I would have to say yes.

How easy are they to install? The oil filteris mounted close to the block... appears to me that it would be a tight fit sliding it over the filter?
