I would hesitate to remove the strap. It's there for you safety and more importantly the safety of your passenger. It keeps them planted to the rear of the bike.
I think it looks better on but I did "notch" the metal part that the bolt goes thru so I just have to loosen each bolt slightly to slide the strap up and off without having to remove the bolt.

You have got to be kidding....the strap on my 08 Ultra was so tight that nobody would be able to use it as a hand-hold if they have gloves on. My wife didn't realize what it was for. Don't see how it could do anything to protect the rider, but even for the passanger it's a useless piece of junk. Took mine off the first time I needed to get under the seat.

I have NEVER, in 50 years of riding, seen anybody ever holding on to that strap on any of the bikes I've owned. Never seen anyone else doing it on their bike either.
Agree on the strap..useless! If it's something you want the passenger to hold on to, get the grab rails (HD says they dont work on 07-08, but they doo (used mine form an 05...sameo - sameo!)
