Not legal here in Louisianaeither and to be honest it's probably illegal in most states if not all. Like stated above, it's not only the legality issue that you have to worry about but the safety of the poor feller you stick out in traffic to block the road!
WhenI workedon the roadI hated blocking traffic for escorts and such, whenI did, itwaswith my emergency light on an believe me I had a lot of close calls by careless, non-attention paying idiots, who tried their best to mash old "D's" ***!!! I can only imagine what it would be like without using emergency lights..."D"

Wow this hits home! I was riding along yesterday behind about 3 cars and all the sudden everyone comes to a screaching halt. A car behind me about ran over me. I pull over a little to see why everyone is stopping in the middle of the hwy and there a bike sitting crossways in the lane with his hand up. About 10 bike pull out of a bike shop and go about 3 miles to a Walmart to collect money for a kids charity. Come on can't they ride that far without being seperated? About got me run over. Good cause though

I see it done all the time, we had a guy get killed running a traffic break on the freeway off ramp; he got hit from behind. The cager did not expect him to suddenly stop. I see guys doing this pulling from the HD dealer, cagers get pissed !

don't like that stop traffic deal myself simply because the guy doing the stopping doesn't generally have the get seen gear on. like a orange vest or whatever. a guy on a bike wearing all black, (lets be serious here, we all usually wear black) stopping an aerage person who has never seen a biker stopping traffic would probally just confuse them. i know i've seen some close ones with this deal!

Sorry to correct Crusher, but this is permissable currently in NJ. NJSA 39:4-144 reauires vehicle to come to a full stop at a stop sign. NJSA 39:4-145 states that if a vehicle comes to a full stop, then the vehicles behind that vehicle do not have to come to a full stop before proceeding through the stop sign. This has been on the books for many years. There is pending legislation in this session to repeal this, but it is still in committee.

Have seen it on a couple of occasions here in WI. Stopping a state highway (they had a stop sign) so they don't get split up... Why don't they just pull over past the stop sign/intersection and regroup? Are theyin that big of a hurry that they need to cause folks who ARE hauling/driving to put food on the table to wait/be delayed?
Illegal, dangerous, inconsiderate, annoying, and gives bikers a bad name.

RE: A question for LEOs on Large Group Riding Protocol for Stop Signs...
Typically when we ride 3-5 we all stop and go through the stop signs together, but its rural and usually no one is around. On busy intersections we all stop, 2 at time and regroup on the other side. Once we stopped at a stop sign, about 5-6 of us, and there was a LEO at the intersection and he was waving us through, so we all went through in one one pass.
I went on a group charity ride last year, there were 2 blockers on Road Kings, and LEOs at major intersections. The blockers were held up a couple times, and the group went through a couple lights that turned red in transit. I was riding tail gunner, and I could see everyone was raising thier left hand as they went through the light - I never saw that before and they didn't raise thier hands when the blockers were in place. Do the cages know about that sign? Before that ride I never saw it before myself.

bill you are correct on the 4-145, it is a rarely enforced statute which is hard to prove. the prosecutors like it in plea agreements though, because its a low fine and no point!
now to add to that... under n.j.s. 39:4-93 (nj trafficcode) a driver"must yield the right of way to a clearing procession." in other words, if one person in a group stops and begins to proceed after the intersection is clear, all others in teh procession may continue. that IS the law. HOWEVER, it doesnt mean that the driver that is on the cell-phone talking, looking at the road through tinted windows, smoking a cigarette, while telling their kids to shut up will actually do the proper thing! so, be careful!
having read through this entire post, seems likenj is the only state in the country with these statutes on the books...
