I think 6th gear is perfect. Where I have my problem is with Cruise Control, not working beyond 85 mph.

You ain't riding the same 07 I am. 6th is good at 70. Maybe 65 on a on a dead flat road or downhill slope.

 

The "big bore" kit solved ALL of my 6th gear problems!!
My bike didn't like anything less than 70mph to be in 6th gear before the change. Now, it can cruise at 55 in 6th!!

 

Anybody ever hear of overdrive?? 6th is more like an overdrive gear, its not intended as a pulling gear. Ride in 6th at 65 or 70, if you need to pass you shift down.....ya know shifting down isn't really all that hard to do. I had a 96 Yamaha Royal Star and Yamaha kept telling us that both 4th and 5th gears were really overdrive gears not intended for hard acceleration, so if you were cruising in 5th you were expected to shift down 2 gears if you needed to pass.....never could figure out why any bike would need 2 overdrive gears. But one is kind of nice.

 

I only rode one stock 07 SG before I bought my 08. I thought the power through all the gears was a huge improvement over my 05 Heritage. Power and torque are not a concern with my current bike.

I really like the 6th gear in my SG. On a calm day at 70 mph, the bike is running so smooth and quiet that I can clearly hear the radio and talk to my wife. 70 mph on my heritage was working the bike moderte, to hard.

My only complaint is that 1st gear is a little to high for my taste. I like a bike to power away from a dead stop by releasing the clutch and adding little or no throttle. I also like it to idle in first gear so slow that I can barely balance it. My current set-up requires a decent amount of throttle to pull away from a stop and at idle in first gear, I am going faster than most people walk.

I have had friends make a primary change and thought about it myself.
My 2007 Ultra has considerable motor work and tons of torque down low and mid range but 6th is still not all that useful. Runs OK but not much throttle response.
Remember that the gear ratio of a 6 speed in 6th IS THE SAME as a 5 speed in 5th. These are both "direct drive" trannies NOT overdrives. The SE 6 speed is a true overdrive with a 6th at .87 to 1 I believe.
If you change the primary, it will snap your neck but you will be turning higher rpm's than an older 5 speed. Granny gear for 1st too.
Save your money until you can buy a true overdrive like the SE 6 speed or a Baker. JMHO

Where did you get that from? I'm doing around 2000 rpm's at 65 what are you turning on a five speed? I agree with rochkes, sixth is great over 60 and I had no problem accelerating without downshifting.

'06 Ultra, 5th gear, 70mph @ 3000rpm
'07 Ultra, 6th gear, 70mph @ 2500rpm, Same bike shows 3000rpm @ 70mph in 5th gear
