Changing Mileage on Speedometer

Changing Mileage on Speedometer
I'm upgrading the gauges on my 06 Ultra, and the speedometer will have to be updated to the current mileage.. anyone know how this is done at the dealer's?
I'm swapping the gauges myself, but my dealer's telling me that to set the mileage, he has to open the fairing to get to the speedometer to do it, and wants to charge me the labor for it.
true??

I don't think so. I worked as parts mgr. at HD dealership and when you order your new gauges they will set the mileage at the factory before they send you the new one. If he wants to verify your current mileage he can do that by looking at the speedo from the front. Nothing has to come apart until you are ready to install new gauges.

AFAIK.....The dealer will just have to first verify the mileage on the original speedo.....then make note of that. Then the new speedo can be set at that mileage (if possible). If you have a factory Touring model service manual, you could do a quick look up for speedo replacement, and see exactly what the MOCO's spec procedure is. In any case even if they have to charge you for labor, I cant see it taking any longer than 30min for them to check it and do whatever paperwork is necessary.

Yup.. that was you..
Arrived just after I posted the question.
Now I gotta look around for a silver faced oil temp gauge, since I took out the air temp.
Thanks!

touring shop manual is enroute.
My question was, does the dealer have to open the fairing get to the speedometer to change the mileage? - they want to charge me 2 hours labor to do it..

Show them the mileage on the bike and tell them you want the one in your hand to be set the same.
They don't even need totouch the bike, even if the new speedo has to go back to HD to be set, which I doubt.
And, I can remove and reinstall my fairing in 15 minutes max, that's not even rushing. Once the fairing is removed the back of the speedo is exposed, they just have to plug in and reprogram.
Are you sure they aren't quoting 2 hours to change all the guages?
