I have an ' 08 Ultra. I run my Garmin Streetpilot. I didn't want to use the cigarette lighter as any sharp left turn caused the factory Garmin lighter adapter to strike the paint on the gas tank. HD sells a neat pair of splitters. Open up the fairing and on the back of the lighter is the positive spade in the middle and the ground spade on the side of the lighter. Unplug the existing ground and hot lead and place the splitter on the respective spade connectors. Then, the original wire plugs into one of the two new positive ends. The other is free for the Garmin positive. A similar connection for the negative (ground) is accomplished. It's clean, looks professional, and the connectors cover the wires to less likely to get contamination. As one other respondent said, there is a hot and ground perhaps 6 inches back from the headlight socket.

Use the lighter socket on my UC, Ram mount without any vibration, clearence, or moisture issues so far. I too like being able to remove everything except the ball mount.

Power my Zumo 550 from the cigarette lighter also. Bought a marine grade cigarette lighter adapter (West Coast Marine) instead of one from Radio Shack though.
