It's called a fork air baffle. I have a chrome one and I like it. Having said that, if you don't mind the black one.....it's alot cheaper!
Do they still sell the black ones? I have only seen the chrome unless it's in the book but not online. I was thinking I'd have to find a used one if I decided againt the chrome.
The black one comes stock on the Rglide. I had them look up the air baffle part # for the Roadglide and ordered it. Fits perfect on my black SG.
It's about $15.00

My mustache tails used to fly up my nose before installing the Fork Baffle, which I learned about on this forum. Once installed, you'd have to look for it to see it, so chrome or black, it doesn't make much difference. I got the chrome one off ebay for $20 including shipping. Here's a couple on ebay right now with pictures

And the reason is to cool the rider. Nothing to do with the engine. I believe, due to the shape of the baffle, that leaving it in place will help cool the engine, as the air that would normally go up the front of the tank into the rider's face, is now directed down at the top of the engine.

10 minutes ago I ordered a black one from Zanotti's. $10.16 plus shipping. Thing to remember with Zanotti's is the more you order the better the shipping rate. I'm getting a large smooth backrest pad and the baffle for $103.92 shipped. The pad alone is $99095 plus tax from your local dealer.

They removed it early on after introduction of the Twinkies to help deal with the increased heat from the new motors. They actually impede the flow of air across the heads by pushing it lower. Now they get more money from people who don't want their mustaches to tickle their nose.
