I'm in the market for a new solo seat for my 05 RK standard. I was initially leaning towards the Mustang with the drivers backrest. After hearing all the positive comments about the Sundowner. I figure that might be the way to go. The Mustang is about twice the price. The Sundowner solo can not accommodate a drivers backrest. Now, I'm 49 with two herniated and one bulging disk in the neck from years of construction work. On the other hand I'm not a wuss either. I figure the only time I might really want a backrest is on 6 hour plus rides, although I have never had one before. I was wondering about you guys who have upgraded your seats with and without backrests. How much use do you really get out of the backrest and would you consider it a necessity?

 

A wuss? No. Much more comfortable even on a 2hr ride? Definitely.

P.S. You can't go wrong with a Sundowner seat BTW.

 

I drove a roadking custom the other day with the hd backrest and it felt awesommmmmmeeeee.Get it and use it for any trip over 1 hour.Ya it doesnt look as good but if your in your 40s who cares.I bought one for my sg and I love it.Get the one that you can adjust.The cost is 100 more but you will thank me later.

Once you try one you will ask why didn't I do this before and what is up with everyone else, why don't they have one?

 

I use my back rest for even the 15 minute ride to work. You might as well ride in comfort.

backrest, i couldnt live without it...i had a bulging disk L4-L5...had to have back surgery...that was in july05.
currently i ride a street glide, with either a corbin solo or dual tour; sometimes the wife rides
with me...both seats have backrest inserts...i can comfortably ride all day...its great being able to
lean back and relax...as far as the "wuss factor", when you are riding, i doubt anyone notices the backrest
and if your off your scooter, put the backrest in your bag.

 

The back rest is good. And by the way, WHO cares what others think as long as YOU are happy.

ditto - I have a driver backrest on my SG. Makes a huge difference. I can ride all day without any problem.

 

I'm only 36 and I love my backrest. I don't really care what other people think...they aren't going to ride my bike anyway.
