Default used accessories switch for heated grips power?

I have an idea of a fix which consists of routing the power supply for the heated grips to the accessories (unused) switch on my 06 FLH due to the fact that my temperature control **** on the heated grip itself is very hard to turn or closed to being seized. I hear that happens over time. I wonder if anyone out there has done this or thought about it and weather it’s even possible. I am unsure of the rating of the switch and amp draw of the heated grips. Electrial is not my strong suit. Any thought would be appreciated. [sm=confused06.gif]

With all due respect....find a friend who DOES know about electrical. I'm pretty versatile, but there are some things I won't attempt, because the price of an error is too high. Your bike's electrical system is one of those things, because screwing it up can damage the entire harne$$.

To answer your specific question, yeah - the switch SHOULD take the load easily, but you need to KNOW the ampacity of your grips, then install a fuse in the accessory fuse holder just a tad over that. To do otherwise could allow a damaged grip/wire to draw too much power, and overload wiring not made for that much amperage. Personally, I'd either replace or D&R the switch - if you can't get inside of it, then I'd spray it down REAL well with contact cleaner and see if that doesn't take care of the problem. Do NOT use WD-40 - it's flammable, and a spark inside the control MIGHT ignite it!

Hey I never thought of getting out the CRC spray that I have used for cleaning electrial contacts... Thanks for the idea there TexasRedneck. I'll give it a shot later today when I get out to the barn.
I did speak to the dealer about it and I just need to get down there to get a work order started becauseit should still be covered under my original warantee (lucky me). They did hint thatthe followingmay be a fix: Set the grips at a confortable temp and install a toggel switch somewhere to avoid the twisting of the temp control. Maybe it was a bad idea to turn them off before starting the bike most of the time...

The toggle idea would likely work, but it's a jury-rig IMO. Suggest to them that they be prepared to repair/replace as long as it's under warranty....

Don't think its gonna work. Too tight of a fit, but I did try to pull back the end of the rubber just so I could get a drop or two in where the dial is and spray some cleaner in, and behing the chrome ring. But it seems fairly well sealed up.

My heat demons draw between 2 and 2.2 amps at 12v. I'm sure yours are similar.
Should be no problem whatsoever for that switch.

I thank you for that but of info. I am going to push for the replacement idea and then try to use the toggel to prevent twistingthe heat rangeon and off every day; but again it still may freeze up someday...

I love em. And I'm so glad I didn't settle for a pair of grips I didn't want just to get heat.

I highly recommend them to anyone wanting heat in their grips.

No offense intended but . . .
