Default December 16,1773 an important date

Just what significance does this date have with this forum?
I'm glad you asked. Sit back I will explain and recap another important event
for you all that is even more important and much more recent in history.
12/16/1773 is the date a handful of American colonists took direct and decisive
Action against Great Britain. That was the night they said we have had enough!
You all know it as The Boston Tea party. A rag tag bunch of misfits brought
the worlds greatest power of that time to her knees and made her Capitulate
to their (our) demands!
NOW a more recent date March 18, 2008! I will briefly recap first, you won't be
disappointed.
6/30/2007 G/F bought brand new sporty in colorado. First Harley
7/29/2007 we did the 1k service ourselves.
(I've had two years college in auto and diesel repair and 1 year motorcycle, been to
Detroit, Cummins, and CAT engine schools, worked as a mechanic 30+ year. I THINK
I am qualified to change oil and do other things laid out in the manual)
She put 2200 miles on the oil change, heat of summer and below freezing cold of winter.
3/09/08 she started bike let it warm up couple minutes. Got on put it in gear, rode 50
feet and BOOM oil tank exploded. We Took Pictures.
3/10/08 showed pics to Service mgr local dealer. He said no problem warranty will cover it.
3/12/08 he saw bike and carquest oil filter. Denied warranty because it was NOT HD filter.
I called him back and he repeated it, told him MOSS MAGNUSON act. Hung up.
3/14/08 I went into the dealer (more on this later). First service mgr said wrong filter
this is for a Chrysler ( well it does fit chrysler, toyota, and others, but is also for HD).
showed him the cross ref and application guide.
He changed story, said it does not have bypass valve. Showed him spec sheet, it does have
by pass valve. Well now he don't want to talk to me anymore.
So I go to parts counter to get filter numbers and info. This parts guy I've known from
elsewhere about 6 years. Always thought he was up front and honest (hah!)
He says same as serv mgr (now, he knows I am experienced Mech). show him same papers.
He says oh well the by pass valve is defective. I just leave no argument.
We request a wix filter service tech meeting.
3/17/08 G/F calls HD factory, explains problemand I explain it in more technical detail. He agrees with my detailed description of problem and how the oil system works. Dealer NEVER called them, she gets ref#, they say will call back in 24 hr or less. They Don't
3/18/08 we have meeting (with filter tech). He tells me about MM act, I give him even more info on it. And he gives us a packet from www.filtercouncil.org about all of this. He agrees filter did NOT and Can NOT cause this problem. He takes filter with him for testing at lab. I suggest he call the GM at dealer and inform them, wix is now involved, he has filter and is going to test. And ask if they want to reconsider their decision of no warranty. He Does. They refuse.
Get home at noon wyoming time. Urge G/F to call MOCO again and see what was happening .
Man is to lunch (in more ways than one).
1:30pm another MOCO person calls her. Asks did she know I was barred from this dealers property
two years ago, she said no (I defended a friend against them 2 years back and won).
Well now they say, they were ALWAYS GOING TO REPAIR this under warranty. (been refused 4 times at dealer.)
so now good news. The dealer and MOCO are going to cover this under the warranty.
Now this person I thought was a good guy... I know he needs his job (most of us do).
But he should of kept his mouth shut.
But he didn't, he jumped in on his bosses band wagon. Tried to cheat me, deceive me and G/F.
He knew I that I knew what Iwas talking about and he KNEW I WAS RIGHT!

I am glad you had the outcome you did. Don't take this the wrong way but all of this over a oil filter? Exactly how much did you save using an aftermarket filter over an OEM? I work at a car dealer and we see stuff like this all of the time. Maybe not to the extent of your issue but non the less. The whole issue may have not cost you a dime but seriously how much time did you spend on this? IMO my time is more valuable than money.

Choochoo........GREAT JOB. You had your facts and stood your ground. You are to be commended for that. No matter what the situation (after market filter other competent part replaced). High -five to you. Right is right and wrong is wrong....You were right, they knew it. It is a shame that we as consumers have to deal with company's that treat us the way they do. Way to stand your ground, dealer should apologize for his actions to you and your g/f and MOCO should do the same on dealers behalf. Way to go ......hope your scoot is repaired above and beyond recommendations...they owe it to you!~

Did I miss something??? Was it determined that the filter was NOT at fault? Can't blame a guy trying to save some dough.
