well i went from an 04 to an 07..............not the same bike at all. the tranny alone is a distinguishing factor. any money saved on the 04 would only be lost on the next sale. my guess is that 07 is for sale because the owner didnt add the isd, which in some 07's is a mandatory upgrade. i like the new bike a lot more than the o4

I've got both, no big difference between 88 & 96 stock. If you are just asking about power, save the $$ and have some fun with it or figure out your own mods. The bling fever is contagious, never can have too many t-shirts, etc.

A 88ci with a 95ci up-grade will run circles around the stock 96ci
+1

I have an 88 that runs circles around a 96 and I saved a ton of money...the sixth speed in my opinion is a total waste....
Keep shopping and you will be very happy you did.....

I have an 88" that will run away from my two friends' Stage I 96" bikes when it comes from dead stop acceleration or top gear roll on's. I credit it to the right cams and 3:37 gearing.

Thanks, that's very good info. I knew about the axles size and thought there were FI improvements. I had NO idea about
crankshaft differences. Wow !!! I really do prefer the 02 & older RG's in the looks dept. The simple pinstripe with the Harley script
on the tank.

I think we've all figured out that a 6 sp is only really necc for long (cross country) freeway only type rides. My wife and I (and the folks we ride with mostly) prefer back roads, (some f/way - gotta get from A to B sometimes)

Don't get me wrong the 07's & 08's are sweet.
Part of my scheme is . . . Can I swing an 02 *and* keep my Heritage? Or at least it'll be closer to a wash, selling it it I have to. But trading in (10K) and plunking 20K + OTD is not an option right now.

Why 02? That's my fav year RG (because of the paint) Solid color. Just a pinstripe, black * chr motor.

Keep your eyes peeled for an 2002. They have the best of everything. IMO, they are the most desireable year so far.
- Better FI than '99-'01 bikes.
- Better swingarm and stronger rear axle than '99-01 bikes.
- Stronger crank bearing than '03-up bikes.
- Forged crank unlike '03 and up bikes which have a cast crank.

I've had all 3,..... 80", 88" & 96".
I gotta say a mildly trickedEVO was just as good as the stock 96 ...................bagger cam , EV-27....hotter ignition, bigger carb.
BUT! We all know the 88 was just the testbed for the 96. The best part of the 96 is the 6 speed trans...not for the 6th gear but the impressive 3rd& 4th gears power band performance married to the 96's power. Add the Breather kit, Slip-ons and the SE Racetunerand you'll pull down 86 hp on the dyno.
And all the complaints about the heat? Ifigured it was wimpys not dealing w/ the fact that most upgraded to 16" moremotor. But at 5k miles my SG began torun hotter. I took it in for remapping & dyno... it was running lean from the 1st map. When it was remapped I got 5 more mpg and the 86 hp and it no longer ran hot.
