I usually fill up my tank when I get down to one gallon of gas. I've yet to put in more than 3.5 gallons at the pump. Somehow, my fuel gauge always reads FULL when I pull away from the station. What gives?

 

I'll take the first shot on this one guys, before you all start the piling on.........uh, that would be 6 gallons!

Yeah, I expect some piling on but the math ain't working out. 1 gal + 3.5 gal does not = 6 gal.

 

HD's fuel gauge is about as good as there Amb Temp gauge... Worthless...

 

With a stock motor and normal riding, you should get pretty close to 40 miles per gallon. With a full tank, the light should come on around 200 miles... When the light comes on for me, I fill up and I usually end up putting 4.7-4.8 gallons in it. This means there was a little over a gallon left in it. If you're light is coming on and you have only ridden like 150 miles than maybe you have a faulty sending unit. The guage is really just to be used as a reference, but I've ridden with a lot of different guys with the same 6 gallon setup and they're all getting the same results as me... Good luck!~

 

My guess is you have more than 1 gal. in the tank. The reserve (when the idiot light comes on) is at least a gal., maybe a bit more,I think.

Don't bother looking at the fuel gauge. Use the miles to reserve on your odometer reset button. Much more accurate. It will adjust as to your speed etc.

 

Don't even use the gauge. Set one of your trip odometers to "0" each time you fill up and pretend that you have a five gallon tank and fill up at 150 miles.

 

Wait until ya have to go to reserve.. then you'll know how far off the guage actually is when ya fill up...
