Dealer vs. independent shop question for new bars
Hello - I'm looking for advice for those more experienced than I. I've purchased WildOne 575's and chrome HD hand controls that I'm going to have installed on my 2008 Street Glide (with throttle-by-wire and ABS) this weekend. I've got extended cables for the throttle-by-wire. My question - should I have the dealership do the this or the local independent shop (Red Racers in Boca Raton)?
The dealer is quoting me about 8 to 10 hours of labor. The independent shop says about 5, and their hourly rate is lower.
My only concern is about affecting the warranty - although I don't see how having a non-HD shop swap bars would affect the warranty.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Eric

RE: Dealer vs. independent shop question for new bars
I had an indy shop do mine. And then I had the dealer re-do the wiring.
Now, let's preface this by saying thatI probably should have done a little more research before I used this shop, so shame on me. Let's just say that instead of using the new switches (with extended wires) that the shop sold to me, they just cut and soldered in some random wires. And let's just say that my headlight stopped working about 3 weeks later on the highway between Deadwood and Custer in South Dakota. At around 9:45pm. And let's just say that I was not happy about that.
My friend and mechanic at a local HD dealer said it looked like, "chop-shop work in there." He re-wired everything but luckily only charged me for 1 hour of labor.
Just make sure that the shop warranties their work and that they will still be in business in a month.
