Something to try. Distributed grounds are not good. Power the Zumo and Modulator from the same points (ground and +12) as close to the battery and frame grounding point as you can get. If you have seperate leads (+ and -) twist them together.

Is the pitch of the hmmmmm constant as you vary engine speed?
