I've got an carbed 06 EGS 95 inch 10.75 forged high compression pistons had the gear whine as many have discussed. After the first service at approximaely 4000 miles I went to Redline Heavy Shockproof and the gear noise is all but gone. Currently have 21000 + miles on the bike with no problems. The gear oil had no effect on the gas mileage still get between 42 to 45 mpg consistantly.
The only time I got bad gas mileage was when I switched to Amsoil 20-50, every tankful was under 40 mpg. I switched to mobil 1 20-50 and gas mileage came back in the 42 to 45 range.

I have an 08 FLHX Street Glide and my brother has an 08 Ultra. They both have the same wine noise in 5th and three different dealers have told us that this is normal and it is because of the cut on the teeth.
I really don't understand why they need to cut the teeth different on just the 5th gear but is really stinks that you pay so much for a new Harley and things like this are not what you expect for your money.

Bet both bikes dont have much mileage yet? These are suppose to be matched gears and some match sooner than others and more mileage should help the noise.I wouldnt be quick to go to some heavy trans fluid yet-give bikes some time, change the fluids frequently because these trans will make copperish flakes when young.Try the redline fluid.I was never a complainer about the 5th gear noise and it did go away as trans worn in.

I just picked up an 09 sg. Has less than 100 miles on it. Fairly loud 5th gear whine. My sons 07 was fairly loud new. After 10,000 miles his sounds quiet now. I will break mine in before changing any fluids to try and quiet it. A combination af miles and thicker sauce (if ness) are sure to take care of this minor annoyance.
